Welcome to my film review blog. Every 4 films I review it with a star rating out of 5. I try to capture the feeling I felt when credits rolled up, before my point of view was enhanced/ corrupted by post-match discussion. The Lovely Bones…torn apart by everyone, depsite my goodwill towards all film I went in expecting some kind of misfire from Sir Jackson. What I didn’t expect to be was torn open, left emotionally bare and tossed out a sobbing mess. This film was a return to the intimate small town settings of The Frighteners and Heavenly Creatures. With all the darkness and hell that those places seem to bury. The film navigated a frightening line between real chills, procedural intrigue and a stunning empathetic central turn by Saoirse Ronan, not to mention a big pallette of gorgeous and immense visuals (*****). Shutter Island was a another film that should of been bad, really bad. There are those that love Scorsese (‘the master’) and those that hate (‘the phoney’). I share neither view but I have to report that I really enjoyed this film and think to be his best of his quartet with Leornado Di Caprio. The production was handsome, the performances good and I liked the plot. What seems a little bit rambling in act 2 suddenly makes perfect sense by the time the twist is revealed. Something felt a tiny bit illogical about it but with great acting, a tight rain-lashed island setting and good period detail I gave it a hugely enjoyable 4/5, (****).
Clash Of The Titans (2D). It was a 2 star, but a thumping great trash-ride of a 2 star. A rollercoaster ride with bad effects, lots of fighting, basic dialogue…but it was fun. Lots of damn fun. Contents of tin-fun. I would happily watch it again. I will reach for it when I’m fed up with being made to think, and sometimes that’s all you need. (**) And lastly for now onto Bright Star. This is a masterpiece in everyway, looks stunning is acted beautifully and delivers a tragic and powerful climax that manages to tie together the themes of obsession (Mr Brown) the power of love over adversity and the power of art over life into a knife-point sharp emotional release. A 5 star in every way and quite possibly a perfect film. (*****).
